Fabricate Sewing Projects and News Update
4 months ago - 22nd May 2024

22 May 2024 Hi all you wonderful sewers...

  • This email is being sent to you as we have you down as a current member interested in our sewing room. (check foot of page to see whether we have you as paid/unpaid) Is this correct? Do you want to be on our sewing volunteers list?

+Gwilym is away overseas so I am filling in with sending out a bit of an update about what's going on in fabricate. ... so here goes...

OUR WORKSHOP relies on volunteers to organise and manage projects, help with all the administration jobs etc. We have been approached to do some new sewing jobs that we would be able to charge for and help fundraise for the continued running of our space... would you be interested? ** projects including:

  • A school project involving creating a large fabric tree that will be installed in the classroom
  • A project guiding students with the making of a school mascot (costume)
  • The making of mens blazers using recycled product
  • making shopping bags from the same product

These projects need people to lead and assist.... are you interested in these or others that may come up?

In addition we need

  • Sewing Lessons - someone to organise the sewing lessons program for the workshop... organise/ co-ordinate tutors, help with planning etc
  • Sales - It would be lovely to have someone in charge of sales of our products we make (find outlets , sell on marketplace, maybe organise a garage sale etc
  • Tuesday/Thursday Co-ordinators: someone to co-ordinate the Tuesday and/or Thursday sessions - this is the day we work on the community fundraising projects. currently the dish rag project, corn hole bags, yoga bolsters, and some other projects we have on the plan but not started yet.
  • New Co-sew Group: to set up another co-sew sessions to run each week. At these you can do your own projects but we need a couple of people to takes turns being supervisors and be able to assist beginner sewers.

Supervisors just have to know how to open/ close, rules of the workshop, a bit of record keeping such as sign in logs, etc. there is a brief induction required for people prepared to be supervisors.

Can you put your hand up for any of the above? please email me at fabricate@wcw.org.nz

Its been a busy year already in fabricate.......... Our volunteer sessions run every Tuesday and Thursday morning. It's the same time as the Menshed so the workshop is busy with a great vibe.

  • We have been producing lots of dishrags made from recycling old towels. Wastebusters sell these on our behalf and they are very popular so its a great on-going project.
  • We also have Yoga bolsters in progress ... if anyone wants one these are great value. they include a removable cover. Special price - only $50 *We finished the Long Finned Eel puppet project for Wai Wanaka.
  • Several members helped with the Wastebusters Repair days held at the workshop.
  • Saturdays we have been running co-sew mornings for members to bring their own projects and get help if required.

Coming up is a beginners sewing class which includes making a bucket hat - three Mondays 3rd June, 10th June, 17th June at 10am-12. you need to register...more details on Facebook.

Sorry about the lack of formatting and pictures - I haven't worked out how to do that on the workshop system. Are there any members familiar with using fantail that could help until Gwilym is back from holiday?

Many thanks Estelle Fabricate Wanaka Community Workshop.
